SNAP 2018 Exam Pattern

SNAP is an online test where candidates need to solve 150 questions in 20 minutes. As per the SNAP exam pattern, there will be objective type questions with 4 responses for each question. Every correct answer will carry one mark while 25% (1/4) mark will be deducted for wrong attempts. In addition to the MCQs, the online test will also have special questions with blank spaces where candidates need to write their answers by using the ‘virtual keyboard’.

The exam conducting body has introduced some changes in SNAP 2018. It is essential for every student to be aware of these changes as it directly impacts their preparation strategies. From the number of SNAP test cities from 102 previously to 92 this year to introducing special questions and reducing the number of questions from 150 to 130, various changes have been suggested in the SNAP exam. Please check the table below for all the changes:

Total number of questions

Instead of 150, SNAP 2018 will have 130 questions. There will be 110 MCQs and 20 non-MCQs in this year’s SNAP exam.

Special Questions

This year, the SIU is also introducing non-MCQ questions. There will be 20 special questions equally divided in all the 4 sections. Candidates need to type the answer of these questions. For example, if the question is, ‘What is the capital of China’? The candidates will be required to type ‘Beijing’ using the virtual keyboard.

Marking system

With the introduction of special question, SIU has also introduced some changes in the marking system. The special questions will carry 2 marks each with 0.5 negative marks while MCQs will follow the old marking system of 1 mark for correct answer and 0.25 negative marks for wrong attempt.

Component SNAP 2018
Marking System for Normal Questions +1 Mark for Each Correct Answer  (110 MCQs)
Scoring Pattern  for Special Questions +2 Marks for Each Correct Answer of Special Questions (20 Non MCQs)
Negative Marking -0.25 Mark for each wrong answer of Normal Question

-0.50 Mark for each wrong answer of Special Question

Changed sectional composition

To balance the non-MCQs in different sections, changes have been made in the sectional composition as well.

Section Normal Questions (MCQ) Special Questions

(Non-MCQ)

Total Questions Total Marks
General English: Reading Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning, Verbal Ability 30 5 35 40
Quantitative, Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency 30 5 35 40
Analytical & Logical Reasoning 30 5 35 40

Total 110 20 130 150

Reduced number of test centers

As against 102 in 2017, there will be only 92 test centers in 2018. Candidates applying for the exam need to carefully choose the test center during SNAP registration.

SNAP Syllabus

Though so many changes have been introduced in the exam pattern, SNAP syllabus remains same. Further, SIU does not declare any official syllabus for the exam. Candidates need to check previous year question papers to get an idea of the syllabus. Usually, the questions are from 10+2 English and Mathematics subjects. Based on previous trends, here is the list of topics covered in each section:

Quantitative Aptitude

  • Percentages
  • Geometry
  • Ratios & proportion
  • Time

General English

  • Sentence correction
  • Idioms
  • One-word substitution
  • Analogies

Logical Reasoning

  • Puzzles
  • Linear arrangements
  • Cause and effect
  • Statements
  • Conclusions

General Awareness – This section has questions based on current affairs.

Tips to prepare for the changes in SNAP 2018

As so many changes have been introduced this year, in additional to the normal exam preparation strategy, the candidates need to focus more on mock tests. Online SNAP mock test is the best way to get acquainted with the process of answering the special questions and increasing the speed for the same. Usually, we are habitual of using normal keyboards, but virtual keyboards are a bit different to use. So, solve as many mock tests as you can. Further, when opting for an online platform to take mock tests, make sure you go with the one that provides tests as per the latest exam pattern. There is no use of solving 100 tests without even getting ready for what you are going to face in the real examination hall.

Eduwhere is one online test taking platform where you will not just get a large number of mock tests as per the latest exam pattern but will also get the detailed analysis reports to boost your preparation.
